Welcome to Otter class!
Welcome to Otter class!
We are a year 2 class and love to work hard and have fun! Mrs Calver and Mrs Dynan are our class teachers and our teaching assistants are Mrs Moore and Mrs Allen.
As a Christian school, our values of love, hope, wisdom, resilience and respect run through all our learning topics. We have our own reflective prayer area in the classroom and have access to the whole school prayer area at playtimes if we choose to use them with children from other classes.
Our teachers work closely with Fox class ensuring that all of the year 2 children have lots of opportunities to learn together. This also includes phonics which is split across our classes. In the Summer Term, all of the Year 2s from both Otter and Fox classes take part in ‘Puttenham Speaking and Listening award', learn to play the recorder and we are very lucky to have tennis coaching from Elstead Tennis Club.
We have learning time in all outside areas, including our school allotment in the warmer months, and our very popular Forest School in the Summer Term. We use the hall and playground for lessons such as our daily run, PE, yoga, gym and drama. We also like to be out and about in small groups in the cabin, group room and library with the class teacher or teaching assistant. We like to work independently, in small groups and across the year group. We love to be challenged and stretched in our learning and when we aren’t sure, we know we can ask the adults for help and reassuring support.
We love books in Otter class, and are often ‘spotted’ reading by an adult! We love using the school’s ‘Book Shed’ at lunch times, visiting the school library and in our class reading area. Here we can find and enjoy fiction and non-fiction books, poetry books and magazines (currently our favourites are animal and wildlife magazines!) Otter class love to listen to our ‘Favourite 5’ books at the end of the day and learning lots of new skills to support our reading. This selection always includes fiction, non-fiction, poetry and a traditional tale. We enjoy leaving reviews about these books as well as voting democratically on the book we will read that day.
Responsibility wise, we take turns with Fox class, to help lead assemblies by doing ‘Cross and Candles’, control the CD player and have a turn as being a Playground Buddy. We vote which class members will represent Otter class on the School Council as part of our British Values.
Since September, we have been very busy making new friends, baked bread, created our own Roy Lichtenstein inspired artwork, learnt all about the stories ‘Supertato’ and ’Traction Man’ in Literacy, picked and ate runner beans with our lunch that we had grown, used the iPads in computing, added and subtracted large numbers, problem solved across the curriculum, worked by ourselves, in pairs and in groups. We can’t wait to see what else we will get up to this year!
