Key Parent and Pupil Information
In order to make your child’s start to school as happy and reassuring as possible we have outlined things that you will need to know.
Induction
When acceptances are confirmed by Surrey Admissions we send all new parents information about the class their child will be in and the names of their class teachers. We invite all new children to classinduction visits in the summer term as well as holding a welcome meeting for parents to come and meet the headteacher, staff and other new parents.
We ask parents to give us permission to contact and visit their child’s pre-school setting or nursery so that the class teacher can visit the child and meet with the nursery teacher.
Starting School
At the beginning of the Autumn term before the children start school we invite them to come for a visit with their parents. It is an invaluable opportunity for the children to renew their acquaintance with their teacher and her assistant before they start school. This also gives the parents an opportunity to have individual time to ask questions.
We stagger the start of school for new children so that they become familiar with the routine in small groups, which is more reassuring for them. For the first week the children attend part time (either morning or afternoon) and the following week are here until 3.00pm. Details are outlined in the parents information pack.
Meet the teacher
Within the first few weeks we have a meet the teacher meeting. This gives you a further opportunity to meet the teaching staff and learn more about the Early Years Curriculum and how you can help your child at home.
How you can help your child be ready for school
Before starting school there are a few things you can help to encourage their independence.
- Teach them how to get dressed including being able to put their coat on and do up the zip.
- Teach them to use a knife and fork.
- Ensure they can use the toilet on their own and remember to wash their hands.
- Enjoy sharing books, telling stories and singing nursery rhymes together.
- Our gates are open from 8.15am and the doors open at 8.30am.
- Please do not drive up and down School Lane between 8.30am and 8.40am. Click on link below for further information regarding parking.
- Our school day starts at 8.30am and finishes at 3pm. This is a total of 32.5hours per typical week.
- Registration starts from 8.30am and closes at 8.40am. Children arriving after this time will be marked as late. If your child is going to be absent, please call or email the school office by 9.00am.
- We have assembly every morning at 10.25am.
- The children have a mid morning break where all year groups can play together.
- Lunchtime is 12.00pm - 1.00pm. We have 2 lunch sittings.
- School finishes at 3.00pm.
Collection at the end of the day
Each class has a 'going home' clipboard for parents to add their pick up arrangements if they are different than normal. If there are last minute changes, please call the school office. Please note we will not allow a child to go home with someone else if prior notice has not been given.

So that we can keep parents and carers well informed about school life and 'What's On', we communicate within a variety of ways, as follows:
Face To Face
A friendly welcoming face will always greet you each morning as you arrive at school. A member of staff will be at the classroom door once the entrance door has opened at 8.30am and Miss De Filippis is often in the playground to greet you. Mrs Hazzard is available to help in the office. If you wish to see your child’s class teacher or Miss De Filippis, please make an appointment at the office. We will try to accommodate as soon as possible.
Newsletters
The school newsletter is issued every two weeks and provides information about recent events, arrangements, interesting community news as well as a message from Miss De Filippis. Please read the newsletter so you keep up with what is happening at the school; things can change very quickly! You can also find copies of current and past newsletters on the website under Parents/Newsletters.
Text Messaging
The school office will send text reminders to parents and carers for more urgent communication. If there is a last minute change, this will usually be how we communicate it to our parents.
School Closures
If the school is closed due to bad weather or an emergency, we will aim to text you by 7.00am and it will also be posted on our website. If we need to close early we will contact you by text.
Calendar
The yearly calendar is found on our website which provides an overview of the year ahead. We also add dates to our newsletter.
Parent Consultation Evenings
These are organised in the Autumn and Spring terms and offer parents and carers an individual appointment to discuss your child’s progress.
Come and See My Learning
Once a term, you have the opportunity to come into your child's class and see their books. This is a very informal session, usually before the end of the school day.
Online learning
We use ClassDojo to update you on children's learning and celebrate their learning and development. Please see the curriculum tab for further information.
End of Year School Reports
School reports are quite comprehensive and detail what your child has achieved and inform you of their next steps.
Reporting Illness
In the event that your child is ill and cannot attend school, please telephone us on 01483 810317 or email info@puttenham.surrey.sch.uk by 9.00am to let us know.
Healthy and nutritious school lunches are served in the Marwick Hall. They provide the opportunity for us to encourage children to try new foods, have good manners and enjoy the social aspect of eating with friends.
Under a government initiative all infant school children are entitled to receive a free school meal.
Our cook is skilled at meeting a wide variety of dietary requirements both for cultural and faith reasons and for medical reasons, such as allergies and food intolerances.
Always be careful when using the internet. It can help you to keep in touch with your friends and help your child's education – but it can also cause harm.
Remember help is always available at school if you are having any problems online.

When your child starts school we ask for detailed information regarding their health. Please update the school office with any changes.
Illness
If your child is going to be absent from school due to illness, please contact the school office by 9.00am.
If your child becomes ill during the day we will contact you to come and collect them. Please make sure we have the correct contact telephone numbers for you. Children who have had diarrhoea or sickness must not return to school until they have been clear of symptoms for 48 hours.
Administering Medicines
We are able to administer prescribed medicines, however we ask that they are administered out of school hours when possible. We can only administer medicine when a Pupil Medication Request form has been completed and if the medicine is in the original container and clearly labelled.
All staff are first aid and epipen trained and are able to deal with any minor injuries that occur during the school day. Children who have bumped their head will receive a bumped head sticker and a note to go home in their book bag. In the unlikely event of a more serious accident, we will always contact the parents.

Children and young people aged 18 years and under who have a positive test result (April 2022)
It is not recommended that children and young people are tested for COVID-19 unless directed to by a health professional.
If a child or young person has a positive COVID-19 test result they should try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people for 3 days after the day they took the test, if they can. After 3 days, if they feel well and do not have a high temperature, the risk of passing the infection on to others is much lower. This is because children and young people tend to be infectious to other people for less time than adults.
Children and young people who usually go to school, college or childcare and who live with someone who has a positive COVID-19 test result should continue to attend as normal.
