Hedgehog Class - Reception

Welcome to Hedgehog class!

Hedgehog class is our Reception year group. The class teacher is Mrs Drury and the teaching assistant is Mrs Gill.

Our aim is to ensure that the children experience a smooth transition from their Nursery to Reception continuing their Early Years Foundation Stage education. In Hedgehog class our learning through play and exploration will continue to be an important part of the school day as well as adult directed activities in Literacy, Mathematics and topic based work.

Teaching in Hedgehog class is organised through a range of approaches and provides a balance of child initiated and adult-led activities. For example:

  • Planned activities where the teacher will work with small groups of children at a time.
  • Small group teaching of early reading and writing through the phonics programme Read Write Inc.
  • Whole class teaching for short periods of time such as story time, direct teaching inputs and carpet time discussions.
  • Opportunities for the teacher to support and engage in the children’s learning as they develop their own interests in continuous provision and develop their own narratives in the role play areas.

Furthermore, the class teacher will differentiate the activities to meet the needs of every child participating.

Outside learning is an important part of the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. The children will have the opportunity to go outside in Hedgehog Garden every day except in cases of severe weather conditions.

In Hedgehog class we live by our school values of Love, Respect, Resilience, Hope and Wisdom. We introduce our values to the children at the start of the Autumn term through their Superhero Me topic. The children will learn about the importance of each value and reflect on how the values support them in their learning, behaviour, play and building respectful relationships.
